Mr Universe muscles into town

MR UNIVERSE, Dave Titterton was in Cookstown last Friday to provide his expert opinion to local body building enthusiasts. The Mid Ulster Mail popped down to Performance Nutrition to chat to world renowned body builder.

Titterton first got involved in body building in 2004 and since then he has enjoyed a dramatic rise in the sport.

“I originally trained as a heavyweight boxer but suffered a bad knee injury in training one day. My trainer told me to focus on building up the muscle around the injured area. When I was in the gym I got talking to the owner and he said I had good genetics for body building. Six weeks later I won the North East Championships and I haven’t looked back since.”

Since his first victory in the North East of England, Titterton has moved on to win titles at British, European and World level. He admitted that the prospect of not getting punched in the head for a living was a major part in his early success.

“I really enjoy the individualism that comes with the sport. I was brought up in a gym from the age of seven and loved boxing. However, I just wasn’t that keen on getting punched in the head for a living.”

“ I am a competitive person and in body building it is all down to yourself to do the hard work. Sometimes in other sports, especially team sports, you are sometime relying on other people. In body building you are on your own and that really appeals to me.”

The 33 year old is still relatively young within his sport and he is looking forward to the next ten years in the sport. His most recent achievement was finishing 5th out 701 competitors at the Arnold Schwarznegger event. This event is one of the toughest in the world and is highly regarded by body builders all around the world.

“Body builders normally peak at around 45 so I still have plenty of years left in me. After I feel that I have reached my peak and achieved all that I want to, then I am looking into running my own gym.”

“I love providing assistance to anyone about their health and general fitness. My own diet is what I call a ‘cave-man diet.’ The less your food is touched by man the better. I firmly believe that if you cut out junk food and lead a healthy lifestyle then anything is achievable for any of the local athletes in any of sport.”
