Murray wins UK championship

BALLYCLARE fire fighter Christine Murray travelled to Scotland at the weekend to take part in the Dick Wedlock Memorial 10k Road Race (UK Fire Service 10k Championships) organised by the Strathclyde Fire & Rescue Service at Lochinch, Pollock Country Park, Glasgow.

Held on a very warm afternoon over a picturesque, quite hilly and demanding course, the difficult conditions failed to deter the determined Murray who started off strongly, held her pace throughout and eventually finished in 42:56 to clinch not only the gold medal as first UK female fire fighter, but also lifted the first FV40 prize in the open race.

Competing against rivals from Scotland, England and Germany, this was another well deserved win for the popular Co Antrim Harrier, who is considering competing in the 2011 World Police and Fire Games in New York.
