Narrow defeat for Seconds

SOUTH came out on the wrong side of a high scoring game at Laurelhill on Saturday.

South began the game very well an exploited the space between the defence and midfield with great effect.

They were able to create a number of chances in the opening period through Campbell and Maguire but unfortunately they couldn’t get the first goal against the youthful Banbridge side.

Banbridge took the lead with their first meaningful effort on goal when they switched the ball well to the top of the circle, allowing a midfielder to crash a ball into the circle for an attacker to scramble the ball home past Alexander in the home goal.

The goal came against the run of play though and South equalized through Maguire at the near post after an impressive run from Hanley. The away side restored their advantage when a Banbridge forward powered his way past four defenders to slot past Alexander with concerning ease. South went into the break a goal behind.

South fell further behind almost immediately in the second half after a defensive error and then went three goals behind when a forward scored from another strong run and lobbed finish. By this stage Banbridge had a firm hold of the match and South struggled to lift themselves to get back into the game.

The home side’s regular concession of possession had proved their downfall all afternoon and was in stark contrast to the relative ease with which the Bann men were able to retain it and expose drastic shortcomings in the home defence.

To their credit South forced their way back into the game and pulled a goal back from a well struck short corner from Hutchinson with around 10 minutes to go.

South even managed to get within one goal of Banbridge when Campbell roofed a shot from the edge of the area on the final whistle, Banbridge had done enough though and ran out deserved winners in the end.
