Nathan claims victory

With over 150 golfers taking to the fairways last Saturday at Silverwood Golf Club the fine weather returned some excellent scoring.

No fewer than 38 players returned with 37 points or better last Saturday at Silverwood for the Darren Clarke Qualifier stableford competition. The winner was Shaun Stevenson with a remarkable 44 points recorded. Shaun (14 handicap) excelled through the front nine in 1 over par with a solid 7 pars recorded and a double bogey on the 6th hole and birdie on the 8th. His back nine got off to a great start with a birdie at the 10th but was followed by two double bogeys and four single bogeys. Victory was secured by a par, birdie finish for a 79 gross (+7) gross.

Also on 44 points for the day was Billy Sterret (22 handicap) who was narrowly beaten on count-back. Highlights on Billy’s front nine were three solid pars on the first, seventh and eighth holes and a bonus birdie on the fourth hole. Billy’s back 9 consisted of six bogeys and two double bogeys on 11th and 16th holes and a par on the 13th was a great round and will result in a two shot handicap reduction for Billy.

Third was Jim Magee (20) with 42 points. Jim’s managed 19 points on the front 9 after a no score on the first hole and a back 9 of 23 points comprised of a valiant effort of pars on the 10th, 14th and 16th holes with a birdie on the 13th.

Fourth place, and narrowly beaten on count back, was Club Captain Shane O’Neill (7) with a tremendous level par gross 72, 42 points. Shane’s two bogeys (3rd, 6th) were cancelled out by excellent birdies on 2nd and 8th holes. Pars were his tally for the remainder of the front nine. His back nine was also very tidy with 7 pars and a bogey on 11th and a good birdie on 13th.

Fifth place went to James Scullion (17) with a gross 84, 41 points. James had a healthy 20 points front 9 and 21 points the back nine with a great effort of 4 pars in the last 6 holes.

Gross prize for the week went to Michael Molloy (2) who wins with a gross 69 (-3). Michael putter was hot round the front nine with 3 birdies on the 3rd, 4th and 7th holes with 6 pars on the remainder. His back nine had one birdie on 13th with a bogey on the 10th with 7 pars on the other holes.

Section winners on the day – Low; John Lynch (41pts); Middle; Darren O’Hanlon (41pts) High; Sean Morgan (40)pts.

Junior winner was Nathan Thompson with 41 points. This is a reward for his consistent practicing and now sees him playing off a new 15 handicap. Senior’s prize was won by Kevin O’Loan with 41 points.

Other notable gross scores on the day was Ethan Headley 70 (-2), Fintan Mc Areavey 70 (-2) and Kevin Munster 71 (-1).
