A fascinating new book traces cricket being played in Coleraine in the early 1850s.

Billy Platt’s “History of Coleraine Cricket Club 1853-2010” is still being compiled and will be published by Coleraine Printing Company in May next year.

Billy, who played cricket for City of Derry for many years, has spent many months completing the research for his 500 page book, complete with photographs.

The author investigates the history of cricket in Coleraine and the surrounding areas from the middle of the 19th century.

Billy reveals that cricket was played in Articlave, Castlerock, Ballinteer, Balnamore, Ballymoney, Bushmills, Downhill, Portstewart and Portrush.

The book will be a season by season account of local cricket over the past century and a half, including details of Coleraine’s matches against the schoolboys of Coleraine Academical Institution Cricket Club.

Billy hopes that the book will be of great interest to cricket lovers across the north west.
