New members roll into Bann Wheelers

THE Bann Wheelers Cycling Club held a club meeting on Wednesday 20th January. The outcome of the evening was consistent with the renaissance within the sport of cycling in recent years as 16 new members joined the club on the evening, over 60 members have already joined the club for the new season, however there are many more new faces about the club at present and it is encouraging that all ages are represented within the new membership.

Club Training Runs

Cyclists from the club continued to build their base miles over the weekend with a group cycling 50 miles on Saturday morning. A large turnout was present at the Strand Service Station on Sunday morning, the 1st group consisted of 7 riders and the 2nd had 15. Present on his first club run for a few years was former Northern Ireland Road race Champion and time trial specialist Eddie Mc Kinney, certainly Eddie’s knowledge of the sport will be of great benefit to newcomers to the sport.

Three club members made the journey to Ballymena on Sunday to participate in Ballymena Road Club’s Reliability Trial. Gary Kendall and Kyle Cromie completed the 80 mile course, Kay Hack ride the 50 mile route and then went for a run afterwards.

The clubs weekly training run meets at the Strand Service Station on the Strand Road in Coleraine on Saturday’s and Sunday’s at 9am, weather permitting. Two training groups will cycle approximately 50 miles, the 1st group will average approximately 18-19 MPH, with the 2nd group averaging 16-17 MPH. The club would welcome anyone who would like to come along and highlight that the rider can turn off to shorten the distance if they wish.
