New route for WatersideHalf Marathon

REGULARS in the annual Waterside Half Marathon will be delighted to hear that they can enjoy a change of scenery this year, with the new route confirmed this week.

But it’s a case of back to the future as the race makes a return to the original ‘out and back’ format used in the early years of the event, which changed course in 2006. The 13.1 mile race, now in its 31st year, attracts thousands of runners and is a favourite of local running clubs and amateur athletes alike.

According to race director Gerry Lynch, the new route should be a welcome change for runners, as it eliminates some of the more challenging segments of the race making it generally more user-friendly.

“The revised course is basically a return to our original ‘out and back’ route of earlier decades - its flatter, faster and more runner friendly,” he explained.

“The ‘out and back’ concept also allows us to double up on the locations of the water stations and the en route Portaloos, and enables participants to monitor the progress of their rivals - something lacking since the loss of the original course back in 2006.

“In addition we can now centralise both Relay Changeover locations, the White Horse Hotel providing the ideal hand over spot.

“We acknowledge the support of the PSNI and Roads Service in agreeing the revised route, and are looking forward to a hugely successful 2012 Waterside Half Marathon with lots of new personal best times for our participants,” he added.

The race, which is run by Derry City Council with support from sponsors Seagate, O2 and Autobar, takes place on Sunday September 9. It caters for runners, joggers, and wheelchair participants and can also be completed in a three person team relay format. Walkers meantime can take on the ten mile challenge walk. The Gransha Park grounds remain the centre for all the action on the day, with the walk starting at 10am and the half marathon starting at 10.30am.

A whole host of family fun activities will also take place in the Gransha grounds from 10.30am, including the 2km Family Fun Run which has a 10.45am start. Fun run entry forms are currently available at St Columb’s Park and all council run leisure centres.
