New Year action at Ballymena Raceway

THE Winter National Championship for the crowd pleasing National Hot Rods is the main event on the festive Stock Car programme at Ballymena Raceway on New Year’s Day (2:00pm start).

The Raceway meeting will be the only opportunity for local short circuit fans to see the rapid National class in action over the winter months, Twelve months ago it was Stewart Doak who took the title and the Portadown charger is expected to be on the pace once again, along with 2011 winner Keith Martin and last year’s runner-up Ian McReynolds.

Alongside the headlining National Hot Rods there is a full programme of support races for the Stock Rod, Group Two Lightning Rod and Junior Rod classes.

There’s an extra incentive for the Stock Rod drivers too as the final winner will be presented with the Gilmore Engineering Challenge Trophy plus two new Yokohama tyres and their entry is headed by World Champion Chris Gordon.

The Raceway promoters also hope to stage a demonstration from the new Speed Stock class! This exciting new formula will be starting up at Raceway in 2013 and some cars may even be finished in time for an outing on New Years Day meeting. Already over 20 drivers have indicated their intention to compete in the budget class where the strict rules will keep costs at a minimum for the competitors.

During the course of the meeting awards will be presented to the Stock Rod, Group Two Lightning Rod and Saloon Stock Car Points Champions for the 2012 season and the winner of the Ballymena Raceway ‘Driver of the Year’ award will also be revealed.

It promises to be an action packed afternoon of short oval motorsport, with the first race getting underway in the Ballymena Showgrounds at 2pm.
