Hole-in-one for Paul McCloskey at Ballycastle

The weekend past brought Week Three of the P.J. McIlroy & Son sponsored Winter League at Ballycastle.

On Saturday the Section one scores couldn’t have been closer, Paul Surgenor (11), Seamus Killough (11) and Gerry McGouran (12) all returned 30 points.

However it was Paul who finished at the summit thanks two birdies on the 12th and 14th holes to give him a better last nine score than Seamus Killough who took second spot from Gerry Mc Gouran thanks his back nine score meaning Gerry had to settle for third place.

The scoring in Section Two was just as close, with the top two players returning the same score and had to be separated by the count back rule. Liam Mc Gonigle was on the right side of the decision, the sixteen handicapper finished with a super birdie on the last hole to pip Gareth Beckett (16) for top spot.

Gareth had to settle for the runners up spot after also returning 31 points; Terrence Bakewell (15) filled the podium with a returned score of 30 points enough to get him third spot.

Sunday’s weather felt more like a spring morning rather than the winter days we have been experiencing of late, and Declan Mc Carry (13) took full advantage.

Declan had one of few birdie twos on the day at the 13th on his way to the top of the leaderboard and thanks to his superior back nine pushed Peter Dowds (11) into second place. Peter also finished with 28 points and his back nine was enough to push Damien McSorley (9) out of the places. The theme continued in Section Two as again the winner and runner up were split only on count back.

This time it was Michael Mc Afee (17) who got the better of Gerard McCloskey (16), Michael finished his round with a run of pars from the 15th hole enough to push Gerard into second place after both men returned a score of 31 points.

Shot of the weekend went to Paul Mc Closkey, Paul had a HOLE IN ONE at the long 17th hole on Saturday. Congratulations Paul from all your fellow members.

The Midweek Stableford was won by Connor Taggart (22) with 40 points over 18 holes; Seamus Killough (11) again was amongst the prizes after his score of 39 points was enough for the runners up spot, with Joe Tannahill (24) taking third spot with 37 points.

Ballycastle’s next completion is Wednesday’s Open Stableford which runs throughout the winter and is only £10 for visitors to enter. For any tee time enquiries contact the Pro Shop on 02820762506.

Another busy week for Springwell Club

On Saturday, Sperrin Harriers hosted the third race in their Winter League Trail Series. The 10K at Drum Manor Forest Park attracted a record field of one hundred and forty athletes.

Springwell’s James Thompson finished ninth in 38:08 closely followed by Chris Millar 40:16, Thomas Moore 41:04, Gerard Mullan 42:25 (1st M50), Jim Breen 44:09 (1st M55) and Julie-Anne Millar 54:47.

With high tide at 7.57am, conditions were always going to be soft underfoot today, and that proved to be the case. Apart from that, the weather conditions were fine for the 56 runners at Saturday’s Portrush parkrun

There were 9 first timers and not surprisingly, only Zac Marsh 35:54 got a PB.

The pre run brief was quite eventful. Kay Hack completed her 50th run today, so her t-shirt will be winging its way to her shortly. Patricia McNally was presented with her 50 t-shirt and Ruairi Kendall received his 10 t-shirt. The clapping didn’t stop there, as Robert Workman received a deserved round of applause on reaching his 60th birthday earlier in the week, and shows no signs of slowing down. Robert along with Donna Hughes are only 5 runs away from a 50 t-shirt.

Springwell’s Chris Denton led the field home in a time of 20:13 and Sonia Knox was first lady home in 22:46

Springwell Times - Chris Denton 20:13, Sonia Knox 22:46, Andy Dowey 23:01, Robert Workman 24:16, Mervyn Thompson 24:33, Peter Jack 24:57, Gary Kendall 25:27, Johnny Goldie 26:44, Rozzy Skuce 28:35, Kay Hack 30:44, Karen McLaughlin 30:54, Ursula Harper 31:50, Ellie Swaile-Blemmings 34:10, Angela Calderwood 36:10, Nikki Higgins 55.08 and Margaret Edgar 55:09.

A selection of buns and biscuits were enjoyed by all afterwards.

Tight at the summit of bowls league

With St. Colman’s having no match this week both the Marian and Loughanreagh have reduced the league leaders lead at the top of Division 1.

St. Mary’s had probably the best chance of catching St. Colman’s but they could only draw against second bottom club Second Kilrea. Five and a half points now separate the top five teams but St. Colman’s have the advantage of having a game in hand.

The Marian entertained Ballinrees and the hosts went home with 6.5 points. James Martin (Marian) had a comfortable 16-6 win over Jonathan Calvin (B’rees).

Victor Millen (B’rees) fought out a draw with Terrence McGarry (Marian). William McCaw (Marian) beat Uel Gordon (B’rees) by six shots whilst Brian McAlary (Marian) won 16-3 against William Calvin (B’rees).

Loughanreagh took on Boveedy and won fairly easily against a struggling Boveedy team. Alan Irwin (L’reagh) took on Ronnie Catherwood (B’veedy) and had a six shot win.

Ian Ross (L’reagh) added further misery to Boveedy, beating Alan Catherwood 13-6. In the second half Ashley McCahon (B’veedy) pulled a game back when he won 10-8 against Alastair Steele (L’reagh).

Edwin Irwin made sure of the overall score for Loughanreagh by beating Mary Graham (B’veedy) by two shots.

Second Kilrea who are languishing close to the bottom of the league gave League contenders, St. Mary’s, a good run for their money with a hard fought draw. It started so well for the visitors when both David Gaile and Jordan Mullen had wins over Brian McGrath and Nicky McCaw (2nd. Kilrea) respectively.

Second Kilrea however struck back in the second half. First Margaret Johnston beat Declan McCann (St. Mary’s) 9-7 and then Ivan Smyth (2nd. KIlrea) had a runaway victory over Harold Kelly (St. Mary’s), winning by 10 shots.

In a match brought forward, Dunloy Presbyterian took on Dunluce but it was the visitors who went home the happier. Thomas Paul (Dunloy) played out a 10-10 draw with David Morrison (Dunluce).

Alastair Kilpatrick made it 2-0 for Dunluce with a four shot win against Mark Shaw (Dunloy). Stephen Dunlop got a consolation point for Dunloy when he defeated Uel McKeeman (Dunluce), 10-7. Alastair McIntyre restored Dunluces’ lead with a 13-3 win over Joe Campbell (Dunloy).

Finvoy Presbyterian still lead Division 2 but Garvagh and District made them fight for every shot. Ken McLenaghan put the visitors into the lead with a one shot win against Gary McCloy (Finvoy).

Geoffery Boyce (Garvagh) added more woe to the home team when he beat Chris Jones (Finvoy) 14-11. It was left to big Joe Moore and young Adam Hunter to ease Finvoy over the winning line when they both won their respective games against David Workman and Peter Reynolds (Garvagh)

Drumreagh had a seven point win against New Row. Carson Boyd put the home team in front by beating Sammy McArthur (New Row) by six shots.

Freddie Monaghan (New Row) almost levelled the game but fell short by one shot against Raymond Clyde. (D’reagh).

It got worse in the second half for the visitors with defeats for Joe Elkin and Jonathan Elder who lost out to Aubrey Walker and Edwin Jackson (both D’reagh) respectively.

First Coleraine had a rare win out in Castlerock and also picked up a very useful 5.5 points. Castlerock started well when Victor Callaghan out played Clifford McLernon (1st. C’raine) winning by six shots.

John Weeks (1st. C’raine) squared the match with a 9-7 win over Ronnie Steele (C’rock). Brian Wilson (C’rock) and Jim Campbell (1st. C’raine) could not be separated on eight shots apiece. It was left to John Camac to secure the overall victory for the visitors with an 11-5 win against Jackie Hutchinson (C’rock).

Meanwhile the Northern Zone IIBA finals night will take place in Ballybrakes Stadium on Friday 24th January. Play starts at 7.15pm so come along and see some great bowling. The draw is as follows:
