Niamh is Tankard winner

THE first week in July saw little real summer weather but golf at the club was not unduly disturbed.

On Tuesday, July3, lady members competed for their PGA Tankard event. There was the usual quality entry and the weekly winner was Niamh McSherry.

Playing off a five handicap Niamh took control with a fine return of 39 points.

Zoe Allen took the gross award with 30 points.

In section one young Annabel Wilson managed a similar total of 39 points to secure the win.

In section two Hilary Heslip took the honours with a score of 34 points.

Meanwhile in section three Mildred Martin took the spoils with another effort of 34 points. The nine hole competition was won by Eileen Faulkener.

In the usual twos sweep there were five winners. They were Fiona Cummins, Susan McMorrow, Annabel Wilson, Zoe Allen and Niamh McSherry.

In the recent Daisy Ferguson pairs competition Pam Graham and Rosemary Callender won with 35 points and will be Lurgan’s representatives in the grand final at Royal County Down (Annsesley) later in the season.

Congratulations go to Lurgan’s young golfing prodigies Niamh McSherry and Niamh Ward for their play in recent times. Both were members of the successful Ulster’s Girls intro-provincial winning team for the seventh year in a row.

In the Ulster Girls Championship at Moyola both reached the matchplay stages and Miss McSherry defeated her club mate in the quarter-final before losing out in the semi to the eventual winner.

In the Leinster Girls tournament at Powerscourt Niamh Ward made it to the semi-final of the matchplay.
