No joy for Dunbarton bowlers in NIPGL finals

In the Youth Singles (Under 18’s), Oran Breen was beaten 21-10 by Aaron Coleman of Ballymena at the semi-final stage.

Kieran Trainor, James Kelly and Sean Trainor battled all the way in their triples semi final against Ballymena’s David Duncan, Mark Torrington and Andi Duncan, eventually losing out by 25-15.

2013 winners David Copeland, Conor McCartan and Derick Wilson did reach the final again, after an impressive Monday evening performance.

In their semi-final they dominated the Larne challenge of Darren Witherspoon, Simon Bell and Alan McLean, winning 23-6 in a game that finished after 14 ends.

However, on Saturday afternoon, the local trio were unable to match that display against Andi Duncan’s Ballymena triple, and had to settle for runners-up after a 18-8 defeat.

Brothers Sean and Martin Trainor where in semi-final action on the Thursday evening, against young Mossley duo Adam McKeown and Ryan Bell.

It was the Under 25 Internationals who raced into an early lead, but the Trainor brothers chipped away at the scoreline and with two ends left trailed 18-15.

A single on the twentieth end left them two behind, and skip Martin duly delivered and forced the game into a tie end, which the Gilford men won on a measure (19-18).

Like their clubmates in the triples, the Trainor brothers could not get into their rhythm on the Saturday afternoon.

In the final they faced Old Bleach pair Michael Nutt and Stephen Kirkwood.

The writing was on the wall for the local pair as early as the second end when they lost a count of seven.

Despite getting back to 1 shot behind (12-13) by twelve ends, the Old Bleach pair soon regained the upper hand and won the title by 25-15.
