Normal service is resumed as Larne glide past Glebe

NORMAL service was resumed at Inver Park on Saturday when Larne cruised past Glebe Rangers to reach the fourth round of the WKD Intermediate Cup. The 4-1 victory was a fair reflection of a game the Reds didn't need to get out of second gear to win.

The game produced some top drawer strikes and a man-of-the-match performance from an unlikely source in Scott McNally. Making his senior debut, the teenager looked inspired throughout and certainly has a promising future.

One-up at the break through a Rafferty strike, the lead was doubled with an opportunist flick for Rafferty's second before a Larmour special, followed up by a cracking finish by McLaughlin. The reward for Larne is a home derby tie against Carrick Rangers this Saturday, with a 3.00pm kick-off.

Having already beaten the visitors in a league game in October the home side started as favourites, but with eight minutes gone it was Brown in the home goal who was called into action, diving to his right to palm away an overhead kick from Kenoway.

Larne bounced back three minutes later when a quick throw from Fulton released Larmour and his fierce drive forced a fine save by Kane.

With 13 minutes gone the home side broke the deadlock. McMennamin started the move on the right and when the ball broke to Rafferty he let fly from 22 yards. Kane managed to get a hand to the ball, but couldn't prevent it finding the back of the net.

McNally then made his presence felt with two chances in the space of a minute, first seeing his shot blocked before Kane was left comfortable save.

Glebe had a chance to level after 29 minutes when Elder created space in the box and should have tested Brown, but sent his shot was wide.

The last action of the half saw Larmour play a great ball through to Rafferty, who fired home only to have it correctly ruled out for offside. The striker did, however, double his tally within a minute of the restart.

McMennamin had delivered another tempting corner from the right which fell to Rafferty two yards out and his back-heel flew into the net.

This goal killed off the Glebe challenge, as Larne pushed on, looking to extend their lead.

Seven minutes later, another McMennamin cross was whipped into the danger area. Rafferty and Marsh both went for the ball, but neither was able to get a touch as the ball ran out for a corner.

A slip by Carland in the home defence allowed Parkhill a clear run on goal, but he dragged his shot well wide of the target.

Brown then went close to extending the home lead after he picked up a Rafferty pass.

After 65 minutes Larne added number three. McMennamin's pass fell to Larmour who sent a cracking first-time volley high into the net before Kane had time to move.

Five minutes later Brown, who was a becoming a spectator in the home goal, was quickly out to block a shot from Elder after he had been played in by Patterson. Brown produced an even better save five minutes later to keep out a well struck volley from Parkhill.

Larne added number four on77 minutes. White, who was on in place of Rafferty, flicked the ball on to fellow substitute McLaughlin who controlled the pass before sending a thundering drive into the net.

With three minutes of normal time remaining Glebe grabbed a consolation when Parkhill provided a quality finish to Patterson’s pass lobbing the ball over Brown into the net, but it was too little too late for the visitors.

LARNE: R.Brown, Moore, Fulton, Marsh, Carland, M.Brown, McLoughlin, McNally, Rafferty, Larmour, McMennamin. Subs: Hughes, McLaughlin (Rafferty), McConnaghie (McLoughlin), White (Larmour), Thompson.
