Northern Ireland titles for Jan Ling fighters

Fighters from local club Jan Ling Freestyle Kung Fu & Kickboxing Club returned from the WKC NI qualifiers in Claudy last weekend with six Northern Ireland WKC titles.

Brien Gillen (18) won the men light contact +90kg title; Curtis Donnell (11) Boys Light contact; Ryan Sharpe (12) Boys Light contact; Josie Carson (8) Girls light contact; and Ernie Johnston (44) won both Men’s Vets +42yr over 85kg & Men’s +90kg titles in points fighting.

Also competing & qualifying for the N Ireland WKC National team, who will travel to Dublin in October for the World Championships, are Lisa Millar (27) 2nd Ladies -65kg Points fighting; Mervyn Carson (43) 2nd men’s Vets +42yrs -75kg points; Paddy McLaverty (35) 2nd Men’s -85kgs & 3rd Men’s Vets +35yrs points divisions; Ernie Johnston 2nd Men’s Vets +35yrs points; Darren Donnell (33) 2nd Mens +90kgs points & 2nd Men’s +90 kgs light contact; his son Curtis Donnell (11) 2nd boys points; Ryan Sharpe (12) 3rd boys points; Brien Gillen 3rd men’s +90 kgs & Jacob Sharpe 3rd boys light contact.

The previous weekend the club travelled to Dublin to compete in two tournaments.

On Sunday at the Tallaght New Years Open, Darren Donnell won second place in Men’s point fighting & his son Curtis won third place in the boys’ division.

The Saturday tournament, The Best of the Best, saw the club return with 15 medals.

Curtis Donnell won both Boys’ point fighting & light contact divisions in his age group, this feat was also matched by another of the clubs young up and coming stars Ryan Sharpe winning first in both disciplines.

Lisa Millar won the Ladies’ Intermediate points fighting category and a second place in her first attempt fighting in Ladies’ Advanced division.

Ernie Johnston won the Men’s Vets points fighting and 3rd in Men’s Advanced section.

Second places went to Paddy McLaverty Men’s Vets , Brien Gillen Men’s Intermediate & Darren Donnell Men’s Beginner points fighting sections.

Third place finishers were Aaron Smyth (12) & Jacob Sharpe (7) in boys’ points, Mervyn Carson picked up third in Men’s Vets and his daughter Josie Carson 3rd in girls point fighting.
