Council house tenants in Newtownabbey were to be allowed to take in lodgers, it was decided in September 1965.

Lodgers would have to be apprentices or adult trainees and properties were not allowed to become over-crowded.

The decision followed an announcement by the Ministry of Development to find accommodation for apprentices coming into the area for schemes run by the Industrial Training Board and the Ministry of Health and Social Services.

All tenants in the five council owned estates - Jennings Park; Queenpark; Longlands Park; Bawnmore and Fairyknowe were to be asked if they would be willing to participate and a list of “suitable” houses was to be compiled.

A similar scheme had been introduced in Larne a few months previously
