A walk down Memory Lane

Recalling her youth in the Fountain, Beth Neely, who has been a long-time resident of Tullyally, was in the Cathedral Choir and Brownies...

“When I was very small I remember swinging around the lamp posts in The Fountain. That’s where I used to live. I remember being in the Brownies and in the Cathedral Girls Choir. I joined the choir when I was about seven and I was in the Brownies from I was about four.

The Brown Owl was Sadie McCorkell, from Clarence Place in the Fountain, and she moved to the Glen on Northland up by Crawford’s Square.

Some of the other officers I remember in the Brownies were Tilly Horrell and Mrs Archibold, but I cannot remember Mrs Archibold’s first name, but I do remember that we have great fun in the Brownies.

I remember we used to go to Fahan in Donegal on the bus and we picnicked on the beach and we played games on the sand. I remember we played rounders - it was the best game.

I was in the Brownies until I was 11 or 12 and then, because the Cathedral did not have a Girl Guides I went to St Augustine’s Girls Friendly Society.

I loved that too.

I remember that among the things I learned to do at the Girls Friendly Society was learn how to embroider and do different things like that.
