Blues make Euro history

AFTER winning for the first time ever in European competition in 1991 Glenavon just failed to go through to the next stage of the Cup Winners’ Cup.

It was a night to remember when the Blues won 3-2 at home to Ilves of Finland in September.

Glenavon had gone behind in the game but a Glenn Ferguson header and a Stevie McBride penalty put them in front.

The visitors drew level but with just 12 minutes left Stevie Conville got the winner for the Mourneview Park men.

The stadium erupted as the final whistle sounded and the Blues became the first Irish League side to win a tie in Europe since 1985 when Glentoran won 1-0 against Fram of Iceland.

However the following week Glenavon suffered the agony of going out of the competition on away goals.

Stevie McBride was the Glenavon goalscorer as they lost 2-1 making the tie level at 4-4 overall but the Finnish team went through.
