Boat safety concern

CONCERN over the measures of safety in relation to boats used on Lurgan Park lake were expressed in 1975.

It forced the council into considering the availability of life jackets for those using the boats.

Alderman Donnell Deeny said that life jackets were obligatory at all sailing clubs and the members were taught to wear them all the time.

“I see lots of children skylarking on the park lake without life jackets,” he added.

However councillors were told by a recreation official that the boats on Lurgan lake were ‘unsinkable’ and absolutely safe.

However Alderman Fred Baird said: “I agree that there is some hooliganism taking place and I am told that one of the boats did sink and that the occupants got into another one.

“The young people get up to some nerve-wracking antics in these boats.”
