Carrick curate in Tanzania

A Carrick curate was preparing for a 300-mile trek across east Africa in June 1980.

Rev. Timothy Kinahan was to be accompanied by Michael Smyth, from Charles Legg Drive, for the epic journey.

The pair were aiming to raise £10,000 to aid the development work of the Christian Council of Tanzania.

The men were to fly to Cairo on the first leg of their three-week journey.

They estimated that they would be hiking 15 miles daily.

Rev. Kinahan, a curate at St. Nicholas’, had helped with relief work in developing countries previously.

Tanzania was reportedly one of the world’s poorest countries in June 1980.

Rev. Kinahan commented that buses had to be taken off the roads as the country had run out of tyres.
