Cinema was enjoying a big boom

The do-it-yourself cinema was booming in 1977 in Lurgan.

There was no professional cinema available so the amateurs stepped in and it was big business. Lurgan had been without a cinema since the Lyric in Union Street burned down.

Dedicated film goers then turned to neighbouring Banbridge by going to the Iveagh.

But private film shows were becoming the ‘in’ thing in Lurgan. One of the most popular venues was the local golf club. For scores of townsfolk Wednesday nights were film nights at Windsor Avenue.

Top films were being shown in the clubhouse but admittance was restricted to members only.

The club’s entertainment officer, Ivan Hanak, said: “The original idea was to boost our membership and create more interest in the club activities. All our showings have been well attended.”

“Bar takings alone have increased ten times since we introduced these successful film nights,” he added.
