Complaints over bad smell at Belfast Lough

There were complaints made about a bad smell at Belfast Lough in October 1985.

An Assembly Motion was put forward on the issue, which was signed by South Antrim Assemblyman Gordon Mawhinney.

He said there were complaints being made about “a continuing obnoxious smell from the Belfast foreshore.”

He added that there was “still a foul smell coming from the tip, despite assurances given by the previous minister and despite the cold and wet summer.”

He stated that a solution should be found to the problem, or dumping should be stopped at the site.

“They cannot continue to inflict on the people of Newtownabbey the inconvenience they have had to put with for the last few years,” he said.
