Council wanted to secure town centre

The security of Carrick town centre was discussed at a meeting of the borough council in April 1979.

The subject was highlighted following bomb attacks in Omagh and Markethill during the previous 48 hours.

Official Unionist councillor Molly Ardill said: “I think we have seen enough over the past few days to make us rethink our decision on opening the town centre.”

The previous week, there had been a spate of bomb alerts at local government offices in Carrick and at Kilroot Power Station.

DUP Alderman Ken McFall said: “Terrorists are attacking our towns. We must protect ourselves and crush the myth that Ulster is getting back to normal.”
