Councillors to ‘raveit up’ at ‘The Scene’club in Whitehead

Teenagers “raving it up” at Whitehead’s club “The Scene” in December 1965 were to be joined on the dance floor by local councillors.

According to a report in the East Antrim Times, members of the local urban council would stand out from the Mod clothes and “Ready, Steady Go” haircuts made famous by Cathy McGowan “Queen of the Mods” from the Sixties television pop show.

The councillors were to attend in a bid to find out the attraction of the club which had given “browned off youngsters in a quiet seaside resort something to do”.

However, “The Scene’s” future was said to have been “hanging in the balance” with the council due to consider the club’s entertainments licence.

City band “MosesK” was due to play at “The Scene” on December 11.

Invitations had been sent to the councillors to attend the performance.

Councillor Howard Johnston said: “I am delighted to accept this invitation. I have been to ‘The Scene’ before and I would have no hesitation in going there again.”

“It would be a good idea if we all went along to get a firsthand look before taking a decision on the entertainments licence.”
