Digger cut power along Antrim coast

More than 350 workers at Larne’s AEI factory were laid off when a digger slashed an electrical cable in Glenarm.

As a result, operations at the Old Glenarm Road plant came to a virtual standstill due to the power failure.

The electricity supply along the coast from Larne to Cushendall was cut off.

The same week in July 1966, six people had to be rescued a mile off Islandmagee after their cabin cruiser sank.

A distress flare had been seen by the coastguard who had been cruising half a mile away .

He sailed alongside the stricken vessel and pulled the passengers, including three children, onboard. The boat’s 15 ft mast had been broken off and six ft cracks were found in1 the hull. The families’ belongings were found intact.
