Do you remember when . . . herring was catch of day at Portmuck

Thirty-eight fishing boats travelled to Portmuck in pursuit of a bumper catch in July, 1979.

The haul included 336 herring and two boxes of mackerel.

Larne Mayor Alderman Roy Beggs said:“The coast should be used as a major sea angling base to boost its growing image as a tourism resort.

“There are tremendous natural resources off the East Antrim coast of vast shoals of herring and mackerel.”

Mr. Beggs said he was “amazed” by the number of herring.

“I have never seen so many fish. It was quite unbelievable. Conservation measures and restriction of catches have been working.”
