Do you remember when . . . Judges said Larne was most improved

Larne received a special award for the Most Improved Place in Northern Ireland in August 1984.

The town also came third in the Small Town category of the prestigious Ulster in Bloom competition.

The winner of this category was Waringstown with Irvinestown in second place.

The competition was organised by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board “in an attempt to brighten up the local environment”.

The judges said that there was an “overall improvement in the standard of entries” since the previous year, particularly in “country areas with a noticeable lack of litter and a trend towards picnic areas, themed gardens and hanging baskets”.
