Eden project takes shape in 1985

A local councillor welcomed the work which started in August 1985 to demolish a number of cottages in Eden Village.

The 28 Ulster cottages in the village were being demolished to make way for new housing.

The councillor hoped that work would begin on the new housing as soon as possible, and he hoped that it could be occupied by the elderly and families.

The same week local people marked the centenary year of the expansion of the piers in Carrick.

The East and West piers had been opened in April 1885 by the then Prince and Princess of Wales.

A number of events were held in the seaside town, which celebrated its maritime history.

Councillors described the port as one of the busiest small ports in the province.

There was a special publication produced by the council to mark the centenary. It detailed the history of the harbour.

Dredging was due to begin in the harbour later on in 1985. This was part of the council’s maintenance programme.

An Alderman at the time said that although trade had left over the years, the harbour was still a major asset.
