End of fire siren in Carrick

Carrick’s fire siren looked set to be switched off when the town’s 20 firemen were issued with pocket radios in July 1971.

Section leader Harry Watson said: If they do not waken during the night, they must be dead. We are extremely pleased with them.”

It was also the end of an era for Carrick’s Literary and Scientific Society which had been established in 1853.
