Explore Coleraine’s fascinating heritage using senses other than sight

Supported by Coleraine Borough Council, Coleraine Museum and the Causeway Museum Service, the programme is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Throughout the Sensing the Past project, museum staff will work alongside the local visually impaired community in a series of trips, activities, workshops and special events.

“Ireland’s earliest known settlement was at Mountsandel nearly 10,000 years ago” says Dr Nicholas Wright from Coleraine Museum. “When you consider that Coleraine was also the first town of the Londonderry plantation, you realisethat the city holds a unique place in the history of this island.”

Coleraine Museum hopes to showcase Coleraine’s unique heritage in a way that is accessible to sighted and visually impaired visitors alike.

“In the process,” continues Dr Wright, “we aim to explore the past and present stories of blind and partially sighted people living across the Causeway Coast.”

The programme will start in August and run over the course of the next twelve months. The collaborative sessions will lead to the creation of an exhibition to be held in the Coleraine Town Hall in summer 2015.

Coleraine Museum would like to invite visually impaired groups or individuals, together with sighted people who support people with visual impairment, to get involved with the programme.
