First leisure centre opened in Carrick

Carrickfergus Leisure Centre opened its doors in July 1979.

The facility was built at a cost of £1.4 million.

The multi-purpose complex was to accommodate a range of sports from badminton and squash to yoga and swimming.

Initially, building work had been contracted to begin in June 1975.

Recreation officer Alan Phair said: “I think the wait has been worthwhile. Now all we want is for the people of Carrick to come and support the leisure centre.

“It is their money which is paying for the building, so they should reap the benefits. There is something for everyone.”

The facility was expected to cost £200,000 to run.
