Footballerhad ashes scattered at Highbury

A former Lurgan man had his ashes scattered at Highbury, the home of Arsenal, in 1993.

Walter (Paddy) Sloan, from the Hill Street area, was, as 15 year old, asked to sign for Arsenal but it was not until two years later that he moved across the water to Manchester United.

As a right half he signed for Arsenal after the war and he became one of the first players to be transferred to the Italian league when Milan paid £12,000 for his services.

He also played for Torino in Italy before returning to England where he joined Norwich City and later Peterborough as a player coach.

His journeys then took him to Australia where he and his family finally settled in Melbourne.

He eventually died aged 71 and his wife Barbara travelled to the Highbury ground with her husband’s ashes.

Walter also had the distinction of making the Guinness Book of Records having played at international level for both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
