Four Trees the league champions

FOUR Trees were crowned the overall league champions in the Guinness Lurgan and District Pool League in 1983.

They took the title after an exciting 5-4 victory over Legahory in the final.

Four Trees got the right sort of start when they won the opening two games. Barrie Bradbury was lucky in the first when his opponent Davy Vaughan went in-off the black but Tony Morris looked in command when he won the second game.

Despite these setbacks Legahory staged a revival with Jim McCracken and Micky Sherry levelling the scores.

Davy Brown put them in front and then Gordon Beattie made it 4-2 leaving Legahory one game from victory.

Richie Allen pulled one back for Four Trees and then Brendan Smyth snatched victory from Paul McIlwaine after the Legahory player was judged to have played a deliberate foul shot.

That left the deciding game between Brian Milligan and Damien Boyle and Milligan looked to be in control until Boyle played an outstanding finish.

Referees for the night were John Bunting and Gerry Carberry while the trophies were sponsored by the Stables management.

Woodville Select won the Royal Oak Cup by defeating Barrie ‘B’ Select 4-3 in the final.

It was an exciting game as Woodville came from 3-1 down to win.

But the real winner on the night was charity, with £100 being raised.
