Glenavon trailed Celtic in the league

ON the sporting front Glenavon were in contention at the top of the Irish League table as the decade began.

They were on 19 points, just one point behind Portadown and Glentoran with Belfast Celtic out in front on 26 points.

Life was about to get much tougher for the golfers at the Lurgan club.

Upwards of 200 young trees were planted on the course under the supervision of Mr William Douglas, of McGredy’s nurseries, Portadown.

Apart from the tightening up of the fairways the trees added appreciably to the appearance of the course.

Waringstown reached the final of the Senior Cup in a rain interrupted match against Armagh.

The villagers dismissed their opponents for 133 with wickets from W. Hampton, 3/35, W. McKinley 1/11, E. McMullan, 3/12, and L. Armstrong, 3/24.

After losing an an early A. Armstrong (54) and R. J. Barnes (68) put on 100 for the second wicket as Waringstown reached 142 for the loss of only four batsmen.

Former Sunnyside player Leslie McNickle was chosen as centre half on the Irish Intermediate League to play Leinster.
