History made by cricket teams

HISTORY was made in local cricket in 1983 when Lurgan and Waringstown met for the first time ever in the final of the Senior Challenge Cup.

Waringstown, of course, were no strangers to the two day showpiece of the NCU season, having dominated the competition in the late sixties and seventies.

Lurgan had only made one previous appearance in the final in 1972.

A packed Strangford Road ground at Downpatrick were kept enthralled over the two days as runs flowed in the sunshine.

With David Dennison making 137 the village side ran up 303, a massive total then in local cricket, in their first innings.

Lurgan replied with a total of 233 with their Indian professional Rahul Mankad run out for 80 when he looked like completing another century.

Waringstown built on their 70 run lead with a score of 230 in the second innings, leaving Lurgan with a mountain to climb.

Young Indian Ronan Shah made 102 but the rest of the Lurgan batting disappointed as they were dismissed for 208, leaving Waringstown winners by 92 runs.
