Inventive students in Rathcoole

A group of Rathcoole High School pupils were working on an exciting project in October 1984.

The group of fifth form boys who were studying for their City and Guilds Exams, were building a hovercraft as part of their craft and technology course.

The hovercraft was going to be used in the school playground.

The hull was being constructed of plywood, with plans to put a seat and a joystick in the cockpit.

It was going to be powered by a lawn mower engine that they had been conducting tests on for over a year.

Technology teacher Mr Raymond Caldwell said: “It gets them thinking in terms of having a project to carry out, rather than just learning theory in the classroom.”
