King’s Arms Hotel’s £250,000 facelift in 1967

The King’s Arms Hotel in Larne was to have a new look, according to a report in the East Antrim Times, in November 1967.

The hotel entrance was to be moved from Main Street to Broadway. Thirty-two en suite bedrooms were to be added bringing the total to 80.

As well as parking facilities at Broadway, the hotel would have an additional carpark at the rear of the hotel.

The new development was to be a three-storey building and designed to be extended upwards. The building work was expected to be completed by April 1968 to cater for the tourist trade.

The renovation project was designed by the Dublin architectural firm, Downs, Meehan and Robson. The contractor was McLaughlin and Harvey.

The hotel was part of the Henry McNeill group which was established in 1853. It was included in package deals for cross-channel visitors.

Meanwhile, visitors arrived at Larne Harbour to find a new £40,000 terminal.

It was opened by the Minister of Commerce Brian Faulkner.
