Larne Council mix-up leads to uncertainty

The mix-up occurred after three local bands who had used the Town Hall to practise in, received letters from the council telling them to stop using in the Town Hall and instead practise in the Tower Pool cafe.

This followed a decision made at a previous council meeting which said that the Town Hall could be used by a temporary youth centre which was being organised by the local Elim Pentecostal Church.

The youth centre had wanted to bring in a tuck shop, snooker tables and video equipment amongst other activities which were to be used by the young people.

Councillor Roy Beggs said at the time that “the intention of making the Town Hall available for youth work was on the understanding that the existing users would continue to enjoy the facilities”.

Due to the mix-up, and the inconvenience that it had caused to all of those involved, it was decided that no further action should be taken until a committee of alderman had been set up to discuss the issue. The committee would be liaising with all of those concerned.
