Larne was repair base for Royal Navy during world wars

According to a report in the Larne Times in 1961, WH Kane and Co. Ltd, of Circular Road, provided this vital service for stricken warships.

The 70-year-old company was also the first firm in the town to encourage apprentices to proceed to further education.

Reinforcing this support, WH Kane took part in Commonwealth Technical Training Week.

Apprenticeships lasted for five years.

The company, which employed 20 men, focused on welding, blacksmithing, steel fabrication and engine overhauling.

It exported to the Republic of Ireland and Scotland.

The same week, the Times reported the cost of repairing steet lamps which had been vandalised.

This amounted to the sum of £216 per annum.

The worst-hit areas in the town were Glenarm Road, where six lamps in a row had been smashed; Upper Waterloo Road, The Roddens and Inver.

The vandalism had been reported to Larne Borough Council by the Electricity Board.
