Larne’s young men are all the rage in the latest ‘ugly’ footwear

Mr. Fulton, proprietor of a shop at High Street,discussed the latest trends in male and female footwear.

He said that these were changing all the time, particularly among the “younger set”.

“Over the past four years, shoe fashion among younger men has shown a very modern trend beginning with the pointed toe, and in autumn, 1964, it was still the pointed toe but with a raised heel.

“The broad chisel toe was a trend but coming up is a very broad square toe called the ugly look.

“These shoes are made with very rough, dull-coloured leather and very masculine.”

He said that this type of shoe was “all the rage” in London and had been proving popular with “pop groups across the water”.

With regard to ladies’ footwear, Mr. Fulton indicated that “Mod” shoes were expected to remain popular with a lower heel and round toe as well as calf-length boots.

He said that “white was going to hold its own” during the summer with high heels and pointed toes to the fore. Light coloured footwear would also remain prominent in pastel shades.
