Life on the canal on exhibition

HISTORY buffs across the Borough can reminisce about the good old days at a historic new ‘Life on the Canal’ exhibition unveiled at Moneypenny’s Lockhouse this summer.

The exhibition will illustrate what life was like on the Canal in years gone by through a wide variety of photographs and memorabilia detailing the people who worked on it, the barges which traveled along the route and the beautiful flora and fauna surrounding it.

Visitors can also indulge in some light refreshments while they enjoy the exhibition or while taking a break from their leisurely stroll or cycle along the wonderful towpath.

Elaine Hill Curator Craigavon Museum Services commented: “We are delighted to launch this fascinating new exhibition which celebrates the vibrant history of this wonderful waterway. We hope the display will evoke heartfelt memories for visitors who have been part of the history of the Canal and will bring back to life what the area was like in bygone years.“

In addition, visitors and locals will also have the opportunity to record their memories about life on the Canal through an innovative Museum postcard project located in the stables which will be collated and made into an historic booklet during the summer.

The exhibition will be open Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays (2pm-5pm) until September.

Please note there is no parking available at Moneypenny’s Lockhouse, access is via the Newry Canal towpath from Portadown or Knock Bridge.
