Looking back... Canadian jets in to purchase collie in Carnmoney

A woman travelled from Canada to buy a dog in Carnmoney, according to a report in the East Antrim Times in June 1964.

Dog-lover Beatrice Patterson flew from Calgary in Alberta in search of a collie.

Two years previously, the woman’s husband had travelled to Northern Ireland on holiday and brought home a rough collie. It went on to win 32 first and four “Best in Breed” prizes at shows across Canada.

Mrs E. Rainey, from Ballyduff Road, had sold the animal to Mr Patterson.

The report said she had been delighted when the Canadian woman had brought the awards to show her and to request another dog.

Mrs Rainey indicated that she went on to sell Mrs Patterson the collie’s mother.
