Looking back... Council proceeds with plans for swimming pool complex

Waves of excitement were rippling through Ballyclare in August 1984 following a decision to proceed with plans to build a swimming pool in the town.

The development was approved by Newtownabbey Borough Council following a proposal by Councillor Sidney Cameron.

Mr Cameron expressed concern that Ballyclare residents had been “continually told they would be provided with improved recreational facilities which had been promised but never materialised.”

Councillor Ivan Hunter said that the need to provide this amenity for Ballyclare would be seen as “a priority”.

The council hoped to secure funding for the project through the Department of Education.
