Looking back... Glengormley ‘ignored’ by road network planners

Antrim Rural Council reacted angrily in early 1961 to plans for the development of the province’s road network which did not include an extension of the M2 to Glengormley.

A five-man deputation demanded a meeting with the Prime Minister, Sir Basil Brooke, Minister of Development, Mr W. Fitzsimmons and local Ulster Unionist MP Nat Minford.

The council had been informed that the new series of motorway contracts would be for a continuous section of the M2 from Templepatrick to Randalstown/Toomebridge.

Council member George Swan said that the plan “ignores everything the council wanted”, which he said, was “a stretch from Glengormley”.

It was then decided to ask the minister to meet the deputation from the council.
