Looking back... Pitch and toss game benefits charity

According to a report in the East Antrim Times, Resident Magistrate John Fox ordered the sum of ten shillings to be donated to the charity.

Ballyclare Court heard that the money was the stake in a game of pitch and toss at Back Lane.

Sergeant William Scott told the court that he had seen about 20 men standing in a circle, one of whom was pitching coins in the air.

When he approached, they fled except for one individual who stopped to pick up the ten shilling note. He was fined £2.

The magistrate said it was “a fair cop”.
