Looking back... School building was two centuries old

A 200-year-old school in Mallusk, which had been closed for 25 years, was sold in 1961.

The school had been shut when the new elementary school opened.

The building continued to be used for some years by the Boys’ Brigade and Royal British Legion.

It was the property of Hyde Park Presbyterian Church in Mallusk.

Hyde Park Presbyterian Church, at Mallusk Road, was formed in 1862 and held its first service in December of that year.

According to a report in the Times in November 1961, the property was said to be “still pretty solid”.

The report said that the “old relic” was to remain standing as a landmark on the bank of the river.
