Looking back... Smoking dump was creating nuisance
Members of Ballyclare’s business and professional women’s club were concerned about the amount of smoke coming from the town’s rubbish dump in October 1965.
The ladies said that it was “creating a nuisance” but they were given an assurance by the urban council that “every possible step was being taken to cut down the smoke.”
Town clerk Ewart Craig responded by asking the club to help by reducing the amount of paper placed in its bins.
He added: “The council has a responsibility to look after public health and we have a man looking after the dump full-time which is an unusual step. It isn’t something being neglected.”
