Looking back... Teenagers offered coach trip to Moscow Olympics

Teenagers in Newtownabbey were offered the opportunity to travel to the Moscow Olympics in February 1980.

The three-week trip to the Russian capital by coach was on offer for the cost of £250.

The offer was made to members of Glengormley Youth Centre by Andy Davis, director of international education and exchange schemes.

Mr Davis was exploring the possibility of organising a 52-seater coach to make the trip to Moscow for young people across Northern Ireland.

He said: “We have negotiated with the Soviet authorities and they are prepared to cater for 300 young people from Great Britain.”

He added that those who make the journey would also have the chance to tour a Russian cruise ship as part of an exchange.

Newtownabbey mayor, Alderman Arthur Templeton encouraged young people to “grab the opportunity with both hands”.

He said: “Russia provides a stark contrast to our way of life and the trip can only be of benefit.

“With countries threatening to pull out of the Olympics, it is my opinion that sport and politics do not mix.”
