Looking back... Tildarg Primary was first school to have a television set

The development included a new classroom, meals kitchen, bike shed and store.

The school was declared open by Alexander Woodside, who was principal from 1902 until 1943.

Mrs H Todd, wife of the chairman of the school’s management committee, unfurled the school flag before parents, visitors and pupils sang the national anthem.

A short service of dedication followed conducted by Rev R.H Galbraith; Rev J Coulter; Rev F Neill and Rev Ernest McConnell.

The principal was Mrs M White, who was assisted by teacher Mrs C McBride. There were 46 children enrolled.

Tildarg was the first school in Northern Ireland to have a television set, purchased two years previously, thanks to “private subscriptions”.

Chairman W.J.F Donald said that Mr Woodside had been “an efficient principal, with pupils obtaining a high standard”.

“In all his work, he was ably assisted by his wife who was also a teacher at Tildarg,” added Mr Donald.
