Looking back... Well trained staff worth weight in gold

The value of training personnel for industry was estimated at the cost of a gold bar, at a business conference in June 1968.

Malcolm Laing, managing director of Management Development Service NI (Ltd), said that the cost of training personnel can be considerable.

However, he stated that the value of an engineer or a skilled labourer, for example, was of equal value to a bar of gold, which he estimated to worth approximately £10,000.

Speaking at a two-day conference in the Glenavna Hotel in Whiteabbey, Mr Laing urged delegates to recognise the benefit to their business of investing in staff training.

An ounce of gold was worth £28.47 in 1968, an increase of 22.34 per cent from 1967.
