Looking back... Whiskey and cigarettes discovered in street in Rathcoole

An appeal was made in the East Antrim Times in October 1963 for the owner of a crate of whiskey to come forward.

Seven ten-glass bottles of the spirit and 5,325 cigarettes were discovered in a cardboard box outside the home of a Newtownabbey resident at Carlan Close, Rathcoole, in May.

Whiteabbey police had been carrying out “exhaustive inquiries” into the haul without success.

At Newtownabbey Petty Sessions, District Inspector GS Mahon made an application for the transfer of property.

However, Resident Magistrate John G Fox decided to adjourn the case until later that month.

Meanwhile, mystery also surrounded the identity of a telephone caller from the United States to a home in Ballynure.

Nineteen-year-old Marbeth Logan told the Times that she had taken a call from America, four times in one evening, asking for a William Logan of Ballyclare.

The caller said that she was ringing from Boston.

Marbeth indicated that the call had passed through the London exchange.

Each international call reportedly cost £5.
