Lurgan woman named Teacher of the Year in 1994

A Lurgan teacher was named as Northern Ireland’s regional winner in the 1994 Teacher of the Year awards.

Mary Sergeant was a teacher at Dickson Primary School. She was nominated by her head teacher, Mr Dennis Livingstone, who said: “Miss

Sergeant has a wonderfully caring and sensitive approach to her pupils, many of whom need that extra little bit of tender loving care.

“Her attitude is very professional and she is extremely dedicated to her job.”

The competition judges found Mary to be an energetic, imaginative and productive teacher who was constantly seeking to improve her pupils’ education. She had an excellent relationship with the children, their parents and her colleagues and was respected by the entire school.”

As part of Mary’s prize she received a full set of Encyclopedia Britannica.

A further part was an expenses paid visit to London, with a friend, to attend a special celebration luncheon where Blockbusters presenter Bob Holness presented the 13 finalists with a special commemorative certificate.
